in-custody deaths

At least 6,182 people died in state and federal prisons in 2020, a 46% jump from the previous year.

Of the over 150,000 deaths made public by the L.A. county coroner since 2000, at least 305 have occurred in jail.

* Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deparment has acknowledged at least 45 in-custody deaths in 2023 alone. We have already seen seven in 2024, as of March.

The LASD runs the nation’s largest jail system and leads the country in in-custody deaths.
