suicide

The overall suicide rates in the U.S. increased 30% between 2000 and 2020. Suicide was the cause for one death every 11 minutes in 2020.

The types of suicides that are made public by the coroner / medical examiner within 24 to 48 hours of occurence are those that are easy to investigate such as hangings and self-inflicted gunshots. More complicated cases may take half a year to close, if at all.

In the United States, people experiencing a mental health crisis may get faster help by calling 9-8-8 instead of the main 9-1-1 emergency line.

NOTE: 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
