in-custody deaths

Of the over 170,000 deaths made public by the L.A. county coroner since 2000, at least 325 have occurred in jail.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deparment acknowledged 45 in-custody deaths in 2023 and 32 in 2024.

As of August 2025, LASD has already reported 32 in-custody deaths.

The LASD runs the nation’s largest jail system and leads the country in in-custody deaths.
