(L.A.) Akito Kato, 14, Ended His Life

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 14-year-old Asian male that occurred in a parking lot.
The coroner’s office has identified the young teen as Akito Kato.
Manner of Death: Suicide
Cause of Death A: Asphyxia
Cause of Death B: Hanging
Other Significant Condition: History of Depression

The decedent’s name appears to be Japanese.
In 2023, L.A. County’s Department of Medical Examiner released the names of three 14-year-olds who the government investigators concluded had committed suicide. One girl chose hanging, a boy shot himself in the head, and the third was a girl who intentionally overdosed on pain pills.
There was a 13-year-old girl who hanged herself, at home. And there was a 13-year-old boy who threw himself into the path of train.
There were also three 12-year-old girls who, separately, took their own lives in 2023.
These cases are just in L.A. County. We do not cover Riverside, San Bernardino or Orange County.

I remember when time when you were the only one who came to the premiere of a movie I made for camp. Nobody else I knew at the time showed up but you did. Rest in peace Akito. I never knew you well but even in the short moments I shared with you you were a great person. Rest in peace.
