So far, we already have 39 confirmed suicides in L.A. County for March — 32 men and 7 women.
For February 2023, we have 49 confirmed suicides, for January 51 — still incomplete sets. Many will not be confirmed until six months from now when results of toxicology panels come in.
The types of suicides that are made public by the coroner / medical examiner within 24 to 48 hours of occurence are those that are easy to investigate such as hangings and self-inflicted gunshots. More complicated cases may take half a year to close, if at all.
Our county has a population of approximately 10 million people.
In the United States, people experiencing a mental health crisis may get faster help by calling 9-8-8 instead of the main 9-1-1 emergency line.
NOTE: 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
