Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 43-year-old White/Caucasian male that occurred at a rehabilitation facility.
The coroner’s office has identified the man as Johnathan Van Oeffelen [sic].
Born in Orange County, California. Mother’s maiden name is Parnell.
Manner of Death: Suicide
Cause of Death: Blunt Head Trauma
Other Significant Condition: History of Depression

Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) announced Sunday night that the decedent was a firefighter of their agency. They also spelled his forename as Jonathan.
* This is an active-duty death, not a line-of-duty death. An active-duty death refers to when a firefighter on the active roster dies while off-duty and not while working.
The government employee in charge of providing the spelling of the decedent’s name to the public is Department of Medical Examiner investigator Mason Chao. Taypayers paid for his $73,315 salary in 2021.
Jonathan E. Van Oeffelen received $263,491 in total compensation in 2022 for his work as a “Fire Fighter (56-Hour Schedule).”
