Suspect Arrested in Hacienda Healthcare Rape Case
On Wednesday, police in Phoenix released a mugshot and announced the arrest of 36-year-old Nathan Sutherland, a nurse accused of raping and impregnating a woman in a vegetative state at Hacienda Healthcare.
Sutherland was employed at the facility as a licensed nurse until he was arrested on Tuesday. He had been working there since 2011.
It was DNA testing that helped solve the mystery of who committed the crime.
“We may not know how many times this occurred,” said Sgt. Tommy Thompson, in regards to the sexual assault.
Sutherland made his first court appearance today.
The baby, born late last month, is reportedly healthy. The victim is a Native American woman of San Carlos Apache tribe who has been in a coma for 14 years.
