Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 22-year-old Black male that occurred in an apartment.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Kani Pickens.

Manner of Death: Accident

Cause of Death: Combined Effects of Gamma-Hydroxybutyric Acid and Cocaine

RIP KANI PICKENS (August 5, 2001 – September 20, 2023)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Wednesday at 1:11 p.m.

The Department of Medical Examiner publicly disclosed the COD ruling on February 4, presumably after the results of tox screening came back positive for the drugs.

Gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid is another name for the generic drug sodium oxybate.

On the street, it is also known as Easy Lay, G, Georgia Home Boy, GHB, Goop, Grievous Bodily Harm, Liquid Ecstasy, Liquid X, and Scoop.

GHB is abused for its euphoric and sedative effects. GHB is mainly self-ingested orally in a liquid mixture. It is sometimes mixed with alcohol to intensify its effects resulting in respiratory depression and coma. The average oral dose ranges from 1 to 5 grams (depending on the purity of the compound this can be
1-2 teaspoons mixed in a beverage). The concentration of GHB in these “home-brews” is variable, and the user is not usually aware of the actual dose they are drinking. The onset of action after oral ingestion is 15 to 30 minutes and the effects last 3 to 6 hours.

GHB is abused by teens and young adults at all-night parties and “raves” and for enhanced sexual experiences.
