Substance Use Promotes Accelerated Aging
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5068223/

Drug addiction involves premature mortality and early onset of age-related disease. For example, due to arterial, cardiac and cerebrovascular toxicity, cocaine is involved in 40% of emergency admissions related to illicit drug use with the highest rates occurring in men aged 35–44. Efforts are geared towards psychosocial and occupational rehabilitation of individuals with substance use disorders. Yet the early onset of diseases triggered or exacerbated by drugs of abuse (e.g., pulmonary hypertension by methamphetamine) remains mostly undetected, resulting in silent disease progression, amounting to a vast personal, social and economic burden.

“High-Functioning Addicts”: Intervening Before Trouble Hits
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3883816/

So-called “high-functioning addicts” exist across all sectors, and workplaces aren’t intervening early enough, which puts those who have addictions at a higher risk of physical and psychological harm.

Whether someone who is abusing alcohol or substances is “high-functioning” often depends less on the individual and more on whether family, friends and colleagues accommodate the addiction.
