An absence seizure is a generalized onset seizure, which means it begins in both sides of the brain at the same time. An older term is petit mal seizures.

Petit mal seizures are more common in children than in adults. Many children outgrow them, but some children develop other types of seizures.

Someone having an absence seizure may appear to stare into space for a few seconds. Other symptoms include lip smacking, eyelid fluttering, and chewing motions.

Seizures happening as a consequence of COVID-19 vaccination mostly occur following other neurological conditions – and not fever. There are several conditions which can present with seizure following COVID-19 vaccination.

Febrile seizure risk following influenza vaccination was first identified when the 2010 Southern Hemisphere seasonal trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) of a single brand in Australia was associated with one febrile seizure per 300 vaccine doses administered, which led to a temporary suspension of influenza vaccine for children in Australia for that season. Prior to this, a US study found one febrile seizure in 70,000 TIV doses in children aged <2 years in 2003–04. In Northern Hemisphere influenza seasons subsequent to 2010, a fivefold increased risk was identified of febrile seizure 0–1 day following concomitant TIV and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) administration in children when compared with receiving either vaccine separately. https://www1.racgp.org.au/ajgp/2020/october/seizures-following-vaccination-in-children
