Positional asphyxia, also known as postural asphyxia, occurs when a person or animal’s body position prevents them from from being able to breathe. In some cases, the diaphragm is essentially crushed under the weight of the body abdominal organs, often as a result of compression of the torso.

Positional asphyxia is a well-recognised risk for drug and alcohol affected individuals related to failure of self-extrication from hazardous positions due to impairment or loss of consciousness, poor physical coordination or reduced strength.
