Asphyxia from drowning occurs when the body is deprived of oxygen due to submersion in water.
When a person is submerged in water, the airways can become blocked by water, preventing normal breathing. The body attempts to breathe, leading to involuntary inhalation of water. This can result in swelling of the lungs (pulmonary edema) and impaired gas exchange. Without proper oxygen intake, the body’s tissues and organs start to suffer from hypoxia (lack of oxygen), which can lead to cellular damage and, if prolonged, irreversible injury or death. As oxygen levels continue to drop, the individual may lose consciousness and their body’s natural reflexes to protect the airway diminish.
While drowning is a less common method of suicide compared to others, it can be a chosen method due to access to water and a desire for a perceived painless end.
Drowning involves a struggle to breathe, which can cause intense physical discomfort and panic. The sensation of water entering the lungs and the inability to get air can be very frightening. The process can be accompanied by extreme fear, confusion, and a sense of helplessness, which adds to the distressing experience.
