mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that affects the thin layer of tissue called the mesothelium. This tissue lines and protects various internal organs, such as the lungs, abdomen, heart, and testicles.
The most common type of mesothelioma occurs in the lining around the lungs, known as the pleura, and is often linked to exposure to asbestos fibers.
Asbestos is a natural mineral that was widely used in construction and insulation due to its heat-resistant properties. When asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested, they can cause damage to the mesothelium, leading to abnormal cell growth and cancer over time—often decades after the initial exposure.
Symptoms of mesothelioma can include chest pain, shortness of breath, abdominal swelling, and unexplained weight loss. Tthe disease is typically diagnosed at an advanced stage, making it challenging to treat effectively.
