DKA

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a dangerous condition that can happen when the body doesn’t have enough insulin, usually in people with diabetes. Without enough insulin, sugar can’t move from the blood into the body’s cells to be used as energy. Instead, the body starts breaking down fat for fuel, which releases chemicals called ketones. When too many ketones build up in the blood, they make it acidic and can poison the body.

DKA often causes symptoms like feeling very thirsty, peeing a lot, having a dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, tiredness, fast and deep breathing, and confusion. Sometimes, the breath smells like fruit or nail polish remover. If not treated quickly, DKA can lead to serious problems like a diabetic coma, and even death.
