A hemiarthroplasty is a rare surgical procedure where only half of a hip joint is replaced—specifically the femoral head (the ball part of the joint). This surgery is usually performed under unique circumstances, primarily after a rare traumatic injury such as a fracture or dislocation of the femoral head, often due to high-impact falls or trauma. Unlike total hip replacement, where both the femoral head and the acetabulum (hip socket) are replaced, hemiarthroplasty replaces only the damaged femoral head while leaving the acetabulum intact. This approach is typically reserved for emergency cases involving femoral neck fractures in elderly or less active patients.
