RIP SARA NICOLE SHORTENO (January 25, 1949 – March 28, 2023)

The decedent was killed in Long Beach while visiting from Canada. She was on her way back to her Airbnb near Second Street and Pacific Coast Highway after a family dinner when the car she was in with two others was struck by another vehicle that was being pursued by Seal Beach Police. She died on the scene.

A suspect driving with a baby inside the car led police on a chase that ended in a deadly crash in Long Beach. The crash killed an innocent woman who was inside a different car and left eight others hurt.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Shorteno was identified by police as 39-year-old Chaz Lamar Long. He was taken into custody and, along with a woman inside his car, was transported to a hospital for treatment. An infant found by authorities inside the vehicle was also taken to the hospital as a precaution. Long, who had a federal no-bail warrant for weapons violations at the time, has since been charged with one count of second-degree murder, three counts of evading a peace officer causing serious bodily injury, and a count of child abuse and endangerment.
