Polymyalgia rheumatica is a common inflammatory condition primarily affecting older adults, characterized by widespread muscle pain and stiffness, particularly in the shoulders, neck, and hips.
Symptoms often manifest suddenly, sometimes overnight, and are typically worse in the morning or after periods of inactivity. The stiffness can last longer than 45 minutes and may improve with movement.
Muscle stiffness is predominantly in the morning. Pain affects both sides of the body, particularly in large muscle groups. Systemic symptoms may include fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, and depression. Functional impairment includes difficulty performing daily activities like dressing or getting out of bed.
