OPEC Secretary-General Barkindo Dies at 63 π
Mohammed Barkindo, the secretary general of the Organization of the Petroleum-Exporting Countries has passed away.
We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11pm yesterday 5th July 2022. Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced shortly.

Mele Kyari, the head of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, tweeted that Barkindo passed away on Tuesday. He did not state the cause of death.
Barkindo was in his home country of Nigeria at the time of his passing. He met with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday. He was giving a speech at an oil and gas conference just a few hours before his death.

Barkindo was appointed secretary general of OPEC in 2016. His term was to last until the end of July 2022. Kuwaitβs Haitham Al-Ghais had already been selected in January to replace Barkindo as OPEC head.
OPEC consists of 13 oil-exporting nations from the Middle East, Africa, and South America, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, the UAE, Nigeria, and Venezuela.
