Fatal accidents involving off-road vehicles—such as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), recreational off-highway vehicles (ROVs), and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs)—on regular roads are a significant and persistent safety issue in the United States.

A majority of fatal OHV crashes occur on roads. In 2023, 67% of off-highway vehicle (OHV) fatalities occurred on-road, despite these vehicles being designed for off-road use and not intended for paved or public roads.

ATV fatalities are heavily concentrated on public roads. In 2023, 484 ATV rider deaths occurred on public roads. Of these, 77% were on rural roads, and 86% of those were on minor roads.

Risk factors: Fatalities often involve lack of protective gear (such as helmets) and alcohol impairment.
