Disseminated zoster, also known as disseminated shingles, occurs when the varicella-zoster virus-the same virus that causes chickenpox and shingles-spreads beyond a localized area of the skin into internal organs like the lungs, liver, brain, or other parts of the body. This condition is more common in people with weakened immune systems due to age, cancer treatment, HIV/AIDS, or immunosuppressive drugs.
Shingles is not the same as genital or oral herpes, although the varicella-zoster virus belongs to the broader herpesvirus family.
