The coroner’s office identified the man as Daniel Escamilla. Born in L.A. County.

Nitrous oxide, misused recreationally from small cartridges known as “whippets,” is inhaled for its brief euphoric effects. The decedent was also drunk — the combined impairing effects of alcohol and nitrous oxide increases the risk of loss of consciousness and fatal hypoxia.

Combining heavy drinking with recreational nitrous oxide use is objectively reckless.
