(L.A.) Alberto Arenas, 29, Died in an Alley

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 29-year-old Latino male that occurred in an alley.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Alberto Arenas of Downey.

Manner of Death: Homicide

Cause of Death: Gunshot Wounds

RIP ALBERTO ARENAS (January 7, 1995 – June 29, 2024)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Saturday at 8:44 p.m.

The decedent was apparently shot dead by police.

Downey PD officers were dispatched at around 6:15 p.m. to a call of a disturbance in the 7100 block of Stewart and Gray Road. The area is just east of the Long Beach (710) Freeway.

Witnesses said Arenas, who allegedly had mental health issues, was lighting fireworks in the backyard and got into an argument with a neighbor before being fatally shot by a responding officer.

Downey police reported that the California Department of Justice was handling the investigation. The DOJ is required to investigate all fatal shootings of unarmed civilians by law enforcement officers under a law that took effect in 2021.
