Case Number: 2023-04553

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 48-year-old Latino male that occurred at Men’s Central Jail at 441 Bauchet Street 90012 downtown.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Abel Garcia.

Height: 5 feet 10 inches. Weight: 250 pounds

Manner of Death: Natural

Cause of Death: Atherosclerotic and Hypertensive Cardiovascular Disease

RIP ABEL JOSE GARCIA (August 3, 1974 – April 26, 2023)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Wednesday at 6:25 p.m.

Ruling by the deputy medical examiner was published in late September, presumably after the results of tox screening came back negative for substances.

The decedent was the 11th in-custody death of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department for the year.

He had a few arrests in his file. It appears he was serving a sentence from an arrest made by LAPD’s Hollywood Division on June 3, 2022. The sentencing date was March 20, 2023.

UPDATE: In April 2024, the decedent’s mother and children sued L.A. County and various sheriff’s staff for civil rights violations, alleging in federal court that he died after being ignored by jail guards as he exhibited symptoms of a major heart attack in his cell and begged deputies not to let him die.
