Positional asphyxia, also known as postural asphyxia, occurs when a person’s body position prevents them from being able to breathe. In some cases, the diaphragm is essentially crushed under the weight of the abdominal organs, often as a result of compression of the torso.

Positional asphyxia is a well-recognised risk for drug- and alcohol-affected individuals related to failure of self-extrication from hazardous positions due to impairment or loss of consciousness, poor physical coordination or reduced strength.
