Gastroparesis is a condition in which the stomach moves food into the small intestine more slowly than normal due to impaired muscle or nerve function.
Because the stomach can’t empty properly, people may develop extreme malnutrition and dehydration, which can weaken the body and disrupt vital organ function. Persistent vomiting can also cause dangerous electrolyte imbalances (like low potassium), increasing the risk of heart rhythm problems. In addition, stagnant food can lead to infections or aspiration (inhaling vomit into the lungs), which can cause pneumonia. In advanced cases—especially when combined with other illnesses—these complications can ultimately result in death.
