Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 52-year-old White/Caucasian male that occurred at his residence.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Jason McLaughlin.

Manner of Death: Natural

Cause of Death A: Acute Cardiac Dysfunction

Cause of Death B: Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease

Other Significant Condition: Secondary Polycythemia

RIP JASON MCLAUGHLIN (July 23, 1972 – April 1, 2025)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.

Polycythemia refers to an increased concentration of red blood cells (RBCs) in the blood.

Secondary polycythemia is an increase in red blood cell mass caused by factors outside the bone marrow, most commonly due to elevated levels of erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that stimulates red blood cell production.

The most frequent causes are conditions that result in chronic low oxygen levels (hypoxia), which stimulate the body to produce more EPO:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea

  • Chronic lung diseases (e.g., COPD)

  • Smoking

  • Obesity hypoventilation syndrome

  • Living at high altitude

  • Chronic carbon monoxide exposure

  • Certain tumors (kidney, liver, brain, uterine) that secrete EPO

  • Kidney disease or cysts

  • Use of performance-enhancing drugs (EPO, testosterone, anabolic steroids)

  • Use of diuretics

The Department of Medical Examiner publicly disclosed the CoD ruling on June 7.
