Electrolyte imbalances are a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of eating disorders like anorexia nervosa. Eating disorders can lead to deficits in key electrolytes like potassium, sodium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which play crucial roles in the body’s normal functioning.
The most common electrolyte abnormality seen in eating disorder patients is hypokalemia (low potassium). This can cause cardiac arrhythmias, muscle weakness, and paralytic ileus (intestinal paralysis). Hyponatremia (low sodium) is also common and can lead to neurological symptoms like confusion and seizures.
Other dangerous electrolyte disturbances include hypophosphatemia (low phosphate), which can cause rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown) and heart failure, and hypomagnesemia (low magnesium).
