Methemoglobinemia is a rare blood disorder that affects how red blood cells deliver oxygen throughout the body.
The disorder can be inherited (congenital) or acquired.
Congenital methemoglobinemia is very rare and can be caused by defects in the hemoglobin protein itself (hemoglobin M disease) or problems with the enzyme cytochrome b5 reductase (type 1 or type 2).
Acquired methemoglobinemia is more common and is caused by exposure to certain medications, chemicals, or foods. Common culprits include benzocaine, nitrites, dapsone, and certain antibiotics.
