Hospitals don’t just save lives during organ transplants—they also profit from them. Behind the scenes, there’s a well-oiled system where organs are treated less like gifts of human generosity and more like high-value commodities. The payments hospitals receive—couched as reimbursement—cover everything from procurement and transportation to the actual transplant and post-op care. Medicare and private insurers foot the bill, ensuring that the business of saving lives stays lucrative. While the public sees it as a life-saving act, the institutions involved rarely miss the financial upside of each organ that passes through their operating rooms.
