Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 68-year-old White/Caucasian female that occurred at her residence.

The coroner’s office identified the woman as Shiva Galustian.

Manner of Death: Natural

Cause of Death A: Exsanguination

Cause of Death B: Carotid Blowout Syndrome

Cause of Death C: Sequelae of Thyroid Cancer Therapy

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Wednesday.

The decedent bled to death after her carotid artery ruptured due to radiation-induced damage to the blood vessels. Radiation therapy to the neck can cause progressive, long-term injury to the surrounding tissues and blood vessels, weakening the arterial wall over time. In this case, those effects ultimately led to a rupture of the carotid artery, resulting in catastrophic hemorrhage and death.
