(L.A.) Reem Gfelner, 51, Ended Her Life

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 51-year-old Caucasian female that occurred at a residence.

The coroner’s office has identified the woman as Reem Gfelner.

Born in Cairo, Egypt.

Cause of Death: Combined Effects of Bupropion, Diphenydramine, Clonazepam, Baclofen, Acetaminophen, Hydrocodone, Clonidine

Egyptian American artist Reem Gfelner

The decedent was an acrylic painter. She suffered from transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition wherein the spinal cord is inflamed. She was dependent on a wheelchair to get around.

Bupropion, sold under the brand name Wellbutrin among others, is an atypical antidepressant primarily used to treat major depressive disorder and to support smoking cessation. It is also popular as an add-on medication in the cases of “incomplete response” to the first-line selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant.

Baclofen, sold under the brand name Lioresal among others, is a medication used to treat muscle spasticity such as from a spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis. It may also be used for hiccups and muscle spasms near the end of life. It is taken by mouth or by delivery into the spinal canal.
