Iron-deficiency anemia is a common type of anemia that occurs when the body lacks sufficient iron to produce hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen.
Research indicates that about 50% of individuals with heart failure experience iron-deficiency anemia, which can lead to poorer clinical outcomes and increased risk of heart-related complications.
Severe iron deficiency can also result in left ventricular dysfunction, potentially leading to heart failure. This condition is characterized by changes in heart structure and function, including increased heart rate and stroke volume to compensate for reduced oxygen delivery due to anemia.
