Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 27-year-old Latino male that occurred on a sidewalk.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Milton Jochola Bellon.

Cause of Death A: Community-Acquired Lobar Pneumonia

Cause of Death B: Streptococcus pneumoniae

The Department of Medical Examiner publicly disclosed the CoD ruling on April 5.

Human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43) is a betacoronavirus that primarily causes mild upper respiratory infections resembling the common cold, though it can lead to severe lower respiratory tract complications in vulnerable populations.

This indivdual’s death resulted from community-acquired lobar pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, a leading bacterial pathogen in such cases, with mortality risks heightened by alcohol use (a known immunosuppressant) and concurrent Coronavirus OC43 infection. While OC43 typically causes mild cold-like symptoms, its role here may involve synergistic effects: viral damage to respiratory epithelium could facilitate bacterial invasion (S. pneumoniae), and alcohol-induced immune suppression might impair pathogen clearance. Though OC43 alone rarely causes fatal outcomes, its coinfection with bacteria in vulnerable individuals (e.g., those with chronic alcohol use) may exacerbate inflammation, delay recovery, or mask early symptoms, contributing to severe disease progression.
