(L.A.) Manuel Mercado, 49, Died at a Hospital

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 49-year-old Latino male that occurred at a hospital.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Manuel Mercado.

Manner of Death: Accident

Cause of Death: Blunt Head Trauma

RIP MANUEL MERCADO (June 1, 1974 – May 18, 2024)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Saturday at 7:58 a.m.

The decedent was a motorcycle rider who lost control of his bike because of another vehicle.

LAPD said the crash happened at around 7:35 a.m. near the intersection of South Avenue 20 and North Broadway in Lincoln Heights.

Mercado had been traveling north on Avenue 20 when a white Ford pickup with a rear metal utility rack heading west on Broadway entered the intersection through a red light, causing the motorcyclist to swerve and lay down his motorcycle to avoid a collision with the truck. In doing so, Mercado collided with the roadway, and his body slid under a box truck traveling southbound Avenue 20, which drove over him.

The pickup’s driver fled the scene without stopping.

LAFD paramedics took Mercado to a hospital, where he expired.
