Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 25-year-old Black male that occurred in a jail.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Malik Simms.

Manner of Death: Natural

Cause of Death A: Acute Pneumonia with Empyema

Cause of Death B: Group A Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae

An empyema is a collection or gathering of pus within a naturally existing anatomical cavity. For example, pleural empyema is empyema of the pleural cavity. It must be differentiated from an abscess, which is a collection of pus in a newly formed cavity.
