Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy is relatively rare, especially in older adults. SUDEP typically affects younger individuals, with the highest risk observed in the 20-40 year age group.

SUDEP is defined as a sudden, unexpected, non-traumatic, and non-drowning death in a person with epilepsy, where no other cause of death is found upon post-mortem examination. For a death to be classified as SUDEP, other potential causes must be ruled out through autopsy.

Note that the body was not brought to the county’s medical examiner. The cause of death must have been decided upon by a private doctor, and not a government pathologist.
