Individuals with alcohol use disorder are at significantly higher risk of developing pneumonia compared to non-alcoholics.
Alcohol impairs the immune system’s ability to fight off respiratory infections by suppressing the function of key immune cells like neutrophils, lymphocytes, and alveolar macrophages. This increases susceptibility to pneumonia pathogens.
