(L.A.) Juan Areyan, 36, Died from a Hit-and-Run

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 36-year-old Latino male in Wilmington.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Juan Areyan.

Manner of Death: Accident

Cause of Death: Blunt Trauma

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Monday at 9:16 p.m.

The decedent was was lighting fireworks on a Wilmington street on the eve of Fourth of July when he was run down by Rachel Gutierrez.

Gutierrez, 37, was charged two days later with murder, hit-and-run, and driving under the influence.

Areyan was hit while he was standing on Fries Avenue just north of G Street. He was with friends and relatives lighting fireworks when the driver of a speeding northbound vehicle ran a stop sign and crashed into him, throwing him more than 120 feet north on Fries Street. He landed under the front end of another vehicle that was exiting a nearby grocery store.
