STATEMENT BY LASD

On July 4, 2023, at 11:40 p.m., Santa Clarita Station deputies were patrolling in the 24100 block of Race Street, Newhall, when they saw a gray Cadillac sedan that matched the description of the suspect vehicle involved in a shooting earlier that night in the unincorporated area of Canyon Country. When deputies conducted a traffic stop and approached the driver, the front passenger, later identified as 24-year-old Greg Timothy Covey Jr., fled from the vehicle.

The deputies initiated a foot pursuit of Covey which was terminated when he ran through a residential property. Deputies coordinated with other responding Santa Clarita Station patrol deputies to contain the area. Shortly thereafter, Covey was seen within the containment area and deputies initiated a second foot pursuit.

During the foot pursuit, a deputy encountered Covey in the 24200 block of Arch Street. Covey fired his handgun at the deputy, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

Covey sustained gunshot wounds to his torso. He was treated at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics and transported to a local hospital for treatment. On July 6, 2023, Covey was pronounced dead.

Two loaded 9mm semi-automatic handguns were recovered at the scene.

There were no other persons injured during the incident.
