Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 41-year-old Hispanic female that occurred at her residence.

The coroner’s office has identified the woman as Gabriela Reyes.

Manner of Death: Natural

Cause of Death A: Pulmonary Thromboembolism

Cause of Death B: Morbid Obesity with Venous Stasis

Other Significant Conditions: Cardiomegaly; Anasarca; Diabetes Mellitus

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Sunday at 7:13 p.m.

The Department of Medical Examiner publicly disclosed the CoD ruling on July 23.

Morbid obesity contributes to venous stasis—a slowing or pooling of blood in the veins—especially in the lower extremities. Venous stasis is a critical risk factor for the formation of blood clots, which can precipitate pulmonary embolism. Obesity also contributes to hypercoagulability (increased tendency to clot), compounding the risk. Prolonged immobility associated with morbid obesity can further worsen venous stasis.

Anasarca is a severe and generalized form of edema, with subcutaneous tissue swelling throughout the body. Unlike typical edema, which almost everyone will experience at some time and can be relatively benign, anasarca is a pathological process reflecting a severe disease state and can involve the cavities of the body in addition to the tissues.
