Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 21-year-old Latino male that occurred in a hospital.
The coroner’s office has identified the young man as Eduardo Gomez Lopez.

People who are drunk or high on drugs are significantly more likely to die from drowning. Alcohol and drug use increase drowning risk by:
- Impairing judgment and decision-making, leading to riskier behavior around water.
- Reducing coordination and reaction time, making self-rescue or survival in water more difficult.
- Diminishing alertness and physical abilities, sometimes causing users not to call for help if in trouble.
- Increasing the likelihood of accidents such as falls, jumping in unsafely, or unsafe boating behavior.
Research shows that alcohol is involved in up to 70% of drowning deaths related to water recreation among adolescents and adults. Nearly half of all adult drowning fatalities involve alcohol. Use of drugs, including illegal substances and prescription medications — especially those affecting the central nervous system like benzodiazepines or psychotropic drugs — also increases drowning risk.
These substances not only increase the chance of accidents but also reduce one’s chances of surviving an incident if it occurs.
