Methadone is a synthetic opioid used primarily for pain management and as a maintenance therapy for opioid dependence.

This is considered an accidental drug overdose.

The relationship between opioid use, including methadone, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an emerging area of concern. A study highlighted that opioid use, including methadone, is prevalent among patients with NAFLD, raising questions about the safety and efficacy of opioids in this population. Opioid prescriptions were documented in about 18% of NAFLD patients, with factors like depression and obesity correlating with higher opioid use.

Given the potential for opioids to complicate liver health, alternative pain management strategies are often recommended for patients with NAFLD to mitigate risks associated with opioid use.
