Laënnec, or portal, cirrhosis is primarily caused by excessive and chronic alcohol consumption. The relationship between alcohol and cirrhosis is unquestioned, but the mechanism of injury remains unknown. Besides cirrhosis, the affected person may show jaundice, gastrointestinal bleeding, and kidney failure.

René Laennec (1781–1826) was the first person to use the term cirrhosis (meaning tawny or brownish yellow, but not simply yellow) in a brief footnote to his 1819 treatise about auscultation. Laennec’s contribution to medicine is mainly on chest conditions, since he is the inventor of the stethoscope; the term cirrhosis was overlooked until William Osler mentioned it as so-called the cirrhosis of Laennec in Principles and Practice of Medicine, the most important medical textbook of the early 1900s.
