(L.A.) Darren Harris, 58, Died on a Public Sidewalk

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 58-year-old Black male who collapsed on a public sidewalk.

The coroner’s office identified the man as Darren Harris.

Manner of Death: Accident

Cause of Death: Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease

Other Significant Conditions: Methamphetamine Use, Severe Cachexia

This is considered an accidental, i.e., unintentional, drug overdose.

Severe cachexia means extreme weight loss and muscle wasting.

Meth suppresses appetite by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the brain. Chronic use can lead to severe malnutrition and weight loss. The drug accelerates metabolism, causing the body to burn energy at an unsustainable rate, contributing to muscle wasting. Long-term meth use can damage the gastrointestinal tract, impairing nutrient absorption.
