C1 vertebra fractures, also known as atlas fractures or Jefferson fractures, are serious injuries to the uppermost vertebra of the spine.
The C1 vertebra (atlas) forms a ring-like structure that supports the skull and allows for head movement. C1 fractures typically occur due to axial loading forces, such as:
- Diving accidents
- Motor vehicle collisions
- Falls impacting the head
The axial load causes the ring of C1 to burst outward, usually resulting in at least two fracture points.
