Formal pronouncement of death was made late Saturday night.

First responders were alerted by the Life360 app, a real-time crash detection system that leverages smartphone sensors to detect severe collisions and automatically notify emergency contacts and authorities to trigger a rapid response.

At around 11:10 p.m., a gray four-door sedan veered off the embankment on northbound I-5 near Templin Highway and flipped over, landing on its roof in lane #3. The car hit at least two other vehicles, resulting in a multi-vehicle crash. In total, four vehicles stopped in the lanes while two ended up on the right shoulder.

California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded, coordinating rescue and requesting multiple tow trucks, though towing efforts were hampered by significant traffic congestion and scene complexity.

At 11:36 p.m., officials issued a SigAlert, closing all lanes in the vicinity of the crash site for several hours.

By 11:51 p.m., a coroner-investigator from the Department of Medical Examiner was officially requested to the scene, confirming that the collision had resulted in at least one fatality.

The SigAlert was lifted at 4:46 a.m.

The location near Sandshed on northbound I-5 is characterized by steep grades, rugged terrain and complex alignment near Castaic Lake and the canyon transition. This part of the highway presents risks for drivers, particularly at night.
