Escherichia coli is a group of bacteria that normally live in the intestines of humans and animals. While most strains are harmless or even beneficial, certain types of E. coli can cause infections.
E. coli typically enters the body through the gastrointestinal tract or urinary system. The bacteria can breach the intestinal or urinary tract barriers and enter the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, E. coli can rapidly multiply and spread throughout the body.
Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection. It occurs when an infection triggers a chain reaction throughout the body, leading to widespread inflammation, organ dysfunction, and organ failure.
