A parent killing a newborn can be connected to severe postpartum mental illness. The most serious condition associated with this is postpartum psychosis, which is different from the much more common postpartum depression.

Postpartum psychosis is a rare but severe psychiatric emergency that can involve hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, confusion, and manic behavior, sometimes leading a mother to develop distorted or dangerous beliefs about her children or family, including fears that they are unsafe, evil, or “better off dead.”

There have been documented cases historically and in modern medicine. One widely discussed example is Andrea Yates, whose case led to broader public awareness of severe postpartum psychiatric disorders.
