(L.A.) Bai Wu, 68, Died at Men’s Central Jail

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 68-year-old Chinese male that occurred while in the custody of the Sheriff’s Department.

The coroner’s office identified the man as Bai Wu.

Height: 5 feet 6 inches / Weight: 155 pounds

Manner of Death: Suicide

Cause of Death: Hanging

RIP BAI LI WU ( December 16, 1957 – May 14, 2026)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Thursday.

The decedent had just been arrested on May 8 by El Monte PD.

He was remanded without bail on the following charges:

  PC 288(a) — Lewd or Lascivious Acts With a Child Under 14
  • Enhancement to Count 1:
    PC 667.61(j)(2) — Sex crime aggravating circumstance
• Count 2:
  PC 288(c)(1) — Lewd Act Upon a Child 14 or 15 by a Person 10 Years Older
• Count 3:
  PC 288(a) — Lewd or Lascivious Acts With a Child Under 14
  • Enhancement to Count 3:
    PC 667.61(j)(2) — Sex crime aggravating circumstance

The court likely ordered no bail because the defendant had the incentive and means to flee the country.

Guards found him lifeless inside his cell at MCJ, which is located at 441 Bauchet Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012

His next court date was to have been on June 17 at Pomona Courthouse.

This is LASD’s 18th in-custody death for the year.
