(L.A.) Tomas Assefa, 27, Died in a Fire

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 27-year-old Black male that occurred at a private residence.

The coroner’s office identified the man as Tomas Assefa.

Height: 5 feet 6 inches / Weight: 160 pounds

Manner of Death: Homicide

Cause of Death: Effects of Thermal Burns and Smoke Inhalation

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Tuesday at 6:40 a.m.

Ruling by the deputy medical examiner was published on June 15.

The decedent’s name appears to be Ethiopian. He had a lengthy rap sheet that included an arrest in June 2023 based on a murder allegation.

LAFD (with assistance from Culver City FD) battled flames in a fully engulfed one-story single family home that appeared to be vacant. It took 37 LAFD firefighters 41 minutes to extinguish the flames, holding the fire to the unit-of-origin. After eliminating the blaze, two patients were found inside. One was transported in unknown condition, and sadly, another was deceased.
